Using a Car Jack & A Jack Stand: Step-by-Step Guide

When it comes to lifting your car to change a tire or perform repairs, follow these steps to use a car jack and jack stand:

  1. Securely park your car on level ground, preferably on pavement. Avoid using a car jack on dirt or grass for safety reasons.
  2. Place wheel wedges, wooden blocks, or bricks behind the tires that will remain on the ground.
  3. Put your car in “Park” and engage the emergency brake. If you have a manual transmission, put the car in first gear while engaging the parking brake.
  4. Consult your owner’s manual to locate the appropriate jack point under your car. If you need to lift one wheel, lift the corner of the vehicle. For lifting the front or rear, choose a jack point at the center of the frame.
  5. There are two types of jacks: scissor and hydraulic. If you have a scissor jack, insert the rod and crank. If you have a hydraulic jack, insert the handle into the jack’s body and pump the handle to lift the car to your desired height.
  6. Once the car is lifted, place a jack stand under the car frame at the “pinch weld,” a reinforced point on the car’s frame.
  7. Adjust the height of the jack stand using the pin, screw, or pawl (depending on the type), and lock it into place. Slowly lower the car using the jack until it rests securely on the jack stand.
  8. Once the car is resting on the jack stand, you can remove the jack. Give the car a gentle push to ensure it remains stable.
  9. After completing the necessary work, use the jack to lift the car a few inches and remove the jack stand.
  10. Lower the car gently and remove the jack. Remember to pick up any wheel blocks you placed earlier.
