To start, you may be wondering, “what is coolant?” Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat and thereby regulating the temperature of the engine block and parts. Engine coolant is crucial for any vehicle you may be driving, new or used! Engine coolant contains an additive that keeps it from freezing in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and so it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Learn more about how to check coolant levels and when to change it below.
Checking the coolant level is simple and doesn’t involve opening the radiator cap, simply check the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the coolant is at the “full” marking line, you are all set! If not, add more coolant by removing the radiator cap and top off the reservoir with a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Be sure to read the label on the bottle to check if it’s premixed. It’s also a good time to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for any damage or leaks.
Note: Before adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled off. Also, to avoid injury, do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot
You will want to schedule service ASAP if you notice a sludgy appearance to the liquid. Normal coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water, any change to this consistency could indicate an internal gasket leak in your engine. It will still be possible to to drive, however, a leaking gasket will cause your coolant to drain quickly. This will put your engine at risk of overheating and being severely damaged.
Over time your coolant levels will deplete, so it is important to check up your cooling system every three to six months. Most often the coolant will be blue, green, yellow, or red in color. If you notice it has become brownish or even colorless, flush the system and replace the fluid.
