Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Many newer vehicles don’t use traditional dipsticks since they come equipped with electronic oil monitoring systems. To know what you’re working with, you’ll want to start by reviewing the automakers recommendations in your owner’s manual. You will also want to ensure you have the proper oil grade according to the manufacturer. Specific recommendations for your vehicle can also be found in your owner’s manual. If you do have a dipstick, you can follow these easy steps to check your oil manually:

  1. Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground and that the engine is turned off and cold.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, look at both sides to see where the level is.
  5. If the oil level is within a crossed-hatched or between two marks, your oil level is good. If not, slowly add more oil of the proper grade of oil until you’ve reached the proper level on the dipstick.
