How to Change a Brake Light

Car brake lights

It’s always a frustrating experience whenever you encounter someone driving in front of you in Conway with a brake light out. Driving with a burnt out brake light is not only dangerous to others on the road, but it can put you at risk of getting rear-ended. You can also get pulled over for having a brake light that’s out and be fined with a ticket. The next time one of your brake lights burn out, you can easily replace it at home without having to bring your car into the shop. Learn the steps on how to replace a brake light in the guide below with the service experts at Myrtle Beach Chrysler Jeep!

Steps to Replace Your Vehicle’s Brake Light

You’ve heard the joke: how many North Myrtle Beach drivers does it take to change a brake light? Wait… that’s not how the joke goes. Anyway, changing a brake light only takes one person, and no ladder is required. Here are the steps on how to change a brake light:

  • Get the Correct Bulbs: First, you’ll need to know what type of bulbs your vehicle takes. You can easily find this out by consulting your vehicle’s owner manual, and you can order these parts online or through our parts center.
  • Remove Tail Light Housing: Once you have the replacement bulb, you’ll have to remove the colored encasing over the brake light bulbs, which can easily be done with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the bad bulb once you take the cover off.
  • Replace the Brake-Light Bulb. The next obvious step would be to screw in the new brake light. But before you do that, you’ll want to apply a bit of dielectric grease to the end of the bulb to prevent corrosion and rust. This also makes it easier to remove the bulb the next time it needs to be changed again.
